Ujjwal Nikam is a Public Prosecutor from India who has worked on prominent cases of murder and terrorism. In the 1993 Bombay bombings, the murder case of film producer Gulshan Kumar, the Pramod Mahajan murder case, and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, he helped prosecute the suspects. He was also the Special Public Prosecutor in the 2013 Mumbai gang rape case, and 2016 Kopardi rape and murder case. In 2016, the government of India awarded him ‘The Padma Shri’. Background Nikam was born to Marathi parents in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. His father - Deoraoji Nikam was a judge and a barrister, and his mother was a housewife. He received a law degree from the S. S. Maniyar Law College of the K.C.E. Society in Jalgaon after completing his Bachelor of Science degree. His son, Aniket Nigam, is a criminal lawyer as well. As a district prosecutor in Jalgaon, Nikam started his career and worked his way up to state and national courts. He has secured 628 life sentences and 37 death sentences in a 30-year career. Due to his involvement in high-profile trials, the Government of India has provided him with Z-plus protection. His Contribution to Legal Industry Nikam has handled many high profile and sensational Rape and Murder cases such as Murder of Gulshan Kumar, 2005 Marine Drive rape case, the 2006 Khairlanji massacre, Murder of Pramod Mahajan, Mumbai gang rape also known as Shakti Mills Gang Rape, Murder of Pallavi Purkayastha, Murder of Preeti Rathi, Kopardi rape and murder case, Mohsin Shaikh’s murder case.
