Background Harish Salve is a Senior Indian lawyer who practises at Supreme Court Of India. From November 1, 1999 to November, 3 2002 he served as the Solicitor General of India. Harish Salve was born into a family of Marathis. He is the son of NKP Salve, a leading politician and Congressional leader. Amriti Devi, his mother, is a doctor. It seems, however that he took his influence from his grandfather PK Salve’s, who was a criminal lawyer. Furthermore, a subordinate judge was his great grandfather. Salve is a qualified Chartered Accountant. He specialised in taxes and switched to the legal profession later on. Salve is said to have been motivated to take up the legal profession by Nani Palkhivala, an eminent tax lawyer. Besides being a CA and an expert solicitor, Salve is a music lover and a passionate piano player. He began as an intern for JB Dadachandji & Co in 1980 and assisted Palkhivala in the case of Minerva Mills. He also served for six years with the former Attorney General, Soli Sorabjee, in 1980. In several cases, Salve was designated as Amicus Curiae by the Supreme Court, particularly in relation to protection of environment. Salve is now 61 years old, and charges from Rs 10 lakh to 20 lakh for one court appearance. He had no issue charging them exorbitantly and won most of the cases, with his clients being Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal, Ratan Tata, actor Salman Khan, political leaders Mulayam Singh Yadav and former cricket lord Lalit Modi. Salve had also represented Vodafone in the Supreme Court when the government sought to tax the deal between it and Hutchison. His Contribution to Legal Industry Salve is known to pick up cases that might not be common but intellectually test him. Also if Salve is persuaded of the innocence of an individual, he can battle his/her case for free. Salve has pleaded for Arushi’s parents - the doctor couple accused of killing their daughter; and also for Uphaar fire tragedy’s victims. Salve, who maintains a punishing routine, travels around the world appearing in high profile arbitration matters, such as the one between the Singh brothers and Daichii. Salve also appeared in the court on behalf of Uber, vociferously defending the Competition Commission of India's COMPAT order to investigate predatory pricing charges imposed by local operators, such as Meru. In striking down Section 66A of the Constitution, Salve played a key role. Section 66A deemed it punishable to send offensive messages through communication service, etc. We need to thank Salve for his efforts in bringing down this draconian law. Salve was asked to turn to cleaner CNG fuel to tackle air pollution from behind the buses in Delhi. The recommendation was incredibly unpopular, but it was adopted. While the suggestion was not happily adopted, it supported the environmental cause. In the 2002 Gujarat riot cases, including that of Bilkis Bano, he was also the amicus curiae. The Bombay High Court later upheld the life sentence for raping Bano, which was awarded to 11 men. Salve just charged Rupees 1 and gave relief to India and the family of Kulbhushan Jadhav, the former Indian Navy officer at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the largest of all his accomplishments. He fought against Pakistan, who had convicted Jadhav on espionage charges. Legal Experience Harish is one of the top international arbitration lawyers in the world.
